Concrete driveways are often favoured because they not only offer a sturdy and long-lasting parking solution, but they require very little maintenance to keep them looking their best. That said, to ensure they remain looking their best for years to come, it is advisable to carry out a little light maintenance every now and again. Follow our tips below to keep your concrete driveway in the best possible condition.

1. Keep clean

The most important step to keeping your driveway presentable and attractive is to ensure it is always clean and clear of debris. Gentle chemicals can be used to clean your drive, but they aren’t necessary as a simple power washer can remove dirt and moss build up, keeping it in the best possible condition.

Any spills that could stain, such as oil, gas or grease should still be removed immediately. The sealant will protect it from staining the concrete but only if it is cleaned away quickly, otherwise it could cause unsightly discolouration

2. Re-seal

Your concrete drive should have had a specialist sealant applied after the concrete had been poured and set. This sealant will gradually wear down and should be reapplied every few years at least, to keep it clean and protected from the elements, traffic and general wear and tear.

Check with your concrete supplier to get recommendations of the most suitable concrete sealer for your requirements, and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

3. Avoid de-icer

Using de-ing chemicals to thaw your driveway in winter can cause spalling and scaling to the surface of the concrete. It can also get into cracks and joints in the concrete and force a freeze-thaw cycle that could damage the structure of the concrete further, leading to larger cracks and damage to the driveway.

Rock salt is less harmful, but for better traction in icy weather, we recommend using sand instead.

4. Take care

Despite being hugely durable, concrete is susceptible to damage if not treated with care. Most driveways are strong enough to withstand normal, light vehicle traffic, but if you have a large work van, or heavy machinery, it’s unlikely your driveway will be strong enough to support it.

Also, scraping and shovelling snow in winter with sharp tools can scratch and damage the surface. Surface damage will allow water to seep into the concrete, resulting in more significant damage to the structure.

5. Replacing your drive

If your driveway is particularly old or damaged, it may need replacing. You can try to remove damaged sections and fill the gaps with new concrete, but you can not guarantee a good bond and the colours may not match if different aggregates are used.

Once damage has progressed beyond the surface and into the body of the concrete, it is difficult to repair and to ensure a sound surface and attractive finish it is sometimes best to start again.
